“Propagation: Seeds or Cuttings?
Presented by Jordan Cummingham
SFA Greenhouse Manager

Jordan Cunningham serves as the Manager of the Greenhouse and Nursery at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Jordan’s presentation will focus on plant propagation, covering techniques such as seed cold storage and scarification, how to find germination requirements for specific species, the role of global and U.S. seed banks, and methods for determining whether propagation by cuttings or seeds is most appropriate.

Jordan earned her Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from SFA in 2015. During her studies, she worked as a student assistant at SFA Gardens, gaining hands-on experience in plant care and greenhouse operations—roles she now supervises as a professional. Her student internships included positions with Moore Farms Botanical Garden in Lake City, South Carolina, and with Disney Horticulture in Orlando, Florida. Following graduation, she expanded her experience as a Garden Supervisor at the Dallas Arboretum before returning to SFA.

In 2017, Jordan began her career with SFA Gardens as a Greenhouse Technician, training under Research Associate Dawn Stover. She was promoted to Greenhouse and Nursery Manager in 2022. In this role, she leads staff, volunteers, and student workers, ensuring successful propagation, growth, and maintenance of plant collections. She also manages plant production for garden research projects and oversees the thousands of plants available at the gardens’ popular bi-annual sales.
